چکیده

The mating disruption technique has been applied since 2000 in Douro Wine Region to control the grape berry moth, Lobesia botrana (Den. and Schiff.) (Tortricidae). In most of the trials, ISONET-L (Shin-Etsu) dispensers have been used, in plots whose surface ranged from 3 to 82 ha. The results obtained have shown that moth captures in pheromone-baited traps were significantly reduced in the treated plots compared to the untreated ones. However, the technique did not successfully reduce larval infestation below the tolerance threshold, mainly in the case of the third generation, and insecticides had to be applied. Some constraints have been identified, such as the high biotic potential of the species, the local orography (high steepness), as well as the wind and the high summer temperatures that, in some years, leads to the exhaustion of the pheromone in the dispensers by the end of July, just when the grape berry moth begin the third generation, which is the most damaging. However, the effectiveness of mating disruption in other European countries, along with the need for environmentally safe management strategies for this key pest, is stimulating its use. In this paper, results on the several years of use of mating disruption are critically discussed and weak spots analyzed, as a basis to identify the real possibilities of the technique in Douro Wine Region.

Lobesia mating disruption by pheromone mesofiber dispensers

Lobesia botrana (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) is a permanently established viticultural insect pest in all vinegrowing countries. According to recent findings, sex pheromones dispensed from electrospun mesofibers serve as environmentally compatible, biodegradable mating disruptants of an innovative type. Their disruptive effects in vineyards last for a minimum of 7 weeks per application, equivalen...

Sterile Insect Technique and F1 Sterility in the European Grapevine Moth, Lobesia botrana

Newly emerged adults of the European grapevine moth, Lobesia botrana (Denis and Schiffermuller) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), were irradiated with various doses of gamma radiation and crossed to unirradiated counterparts of the opposite sex. Fecundity was decreased when unirradiated females were mated with either 300-or 350-Gy-irradiated males. Adult males that were irradiated with 400 Gy and mat...

Ochratoxin A Management in Vineyards by Lobesia botrana Biocontrol

Grape berries attacked by Lobesia botrana larvae are more easily infected by Aspergillus section Nigri (black aspergilli) ochratoxigenic species. Two-year field trials were carried out in Apulia (Italy) to evaluate a bioinsecticide control strategy against L. botrana and the indirect effect on reducing ochratoxin A (OTA) contamination in vineyards. A commercial Bacillus thuringiensis formulate...

Maximum Entropy Niche-Based Modeling (Maxent) of Potential Geographical Distributions of Lobesia Botrana (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) in China

Lobesia botrana (Denis & Schiffermüller, 1775) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) is one of the most destructive pests of grape in the Palearctic region. The potential geographical distribution of this pest is important to agriculture security. In this study, Maxent and ArcGIS were used to project the potential geographical distribution of L. botrana in China under the current climate. The result indic...
